Example of A Disruptive Business

From a business and investment perspective, the most interesting businesses are those that are disrupting their industry by totally destroying the pricing models.

Usually, the talk is about digital delivery pushing the price of bit-based products (e.g. music, information, or movies) towards $0. But, it really becomes interesting when disruption happens in mature industries dealing with physical products.

Here's a stunning example - Zenni Optical. They are destroying the pricing structure for eyeglasses. They can offer a high-quality pair for much less than their competitors can touch. In fact, according to this article on Zenni Optical, they can offer eyeglasses for as low as $8!

They have three advantages:

1. They deal directly over the internet with retail customers, and rely primarily on word of mouth from satisfied customers.

2. They take advantage of a "flat" world and contract out manufacturing to high-quality labs in lower-cost countries.

3. They only carry their own line of frames.

Zenni isn't for everyone. They are not right for people who want designer frames or one hour delivery. Since their labs aren't local, it takes time before your glasses can be delivered.

However, these people are probably not Zenni's targeted demographics. They are going for people who put a priority on good quality, but low priced, eye wear.

This is an example of the free market at its best because they are making money by satisfying a need and helping an under-served market.

We usually think of companies like Google as revolutionizing the world - not a maker of eye glasses. But, while it's true that Zenni isn't changing the whole world, they are probably impacting many individuals - such as a low income student who will now succeed at school because he or she can now afford glasses. Down the road, if this person becomes a doctor or scientist, then society will have benefited.

Using A Short-Term Bond Fund to Park My Cash

As I stated in a previous post, my portfolio had a large 44% gain for 2009.
Stock Trading Riches" system and re-balanced each position, I ended up generating a lot of cash for the cash pool.

As I've also stated before, I'm happy using Scottrade as my broker*. However, they do not offer a money market "sweep account", and are only offering .15% on cash balances.

New Source of Money Articles

I recently came across an articles site called "A1 Articles". They have a large section on Money Articles.

As I was looking at this section, I was struck by the vast number of informative topics: trading ("Does the Relative Strength Indicator Function?"), Google Adsense ("Easy Money Making Ideas - Google Adsense"), the business of video games ("Can You Make Money Testing Video Games?"), personal finance "Bad Credit History Loans"), etc.

As I read through some of the articles, I saw that they have pretty much the same level of quality as other, more well-known, article sites. I therefore think that you might want to consider using this directory as another source for publishing your money, business, finance, etc. articles, and for finding relevant content for your sites and blogs.

Another feature of the site that I really like is that, while viewing an article, the reader is shown a column on the right hand size that lists other related articles. This way, the articles promote each other.

Why Singer Tony Bennett Might Think That I'm An Idiot

Well, I'm probably being hard on myself. It's been almost 15 years and he probably is used to strange fans.

Anyway, the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois (probably the second biggest mall after "Mall of America") had a grand re-opening after a major remodel, and they hired Tony Bennett to perform in the mall for free.

My brother and I went there. It was crowded, but the concert was really nice. Then, we went to do some shopping. After a while, I noticed people lining up at an art gallery in the mall. It turned out that the gallery was selling some of Bennett's paintings, and he was signing autographs.

I was able to get into the line just before they cut it off. Eventually, I made it up to the front and you could see that he was tired, but pleasant. The guy in front of me must have come from work, so he had his employee badge out, and he let Bennett copy his name off that.

Then it was my turn. I told him my name, and he asked me to spell it. I went "P r a ..." and then blanked out. Maybe I was nervous.

All I could remember was the guy before me showing his badge. So, I pulled out my wallet and gave Tony my driver's license! He took it, but looked at me a little strangely.

Later, I was kicking myself for being a bonehead.

I'm just glad that his bodyguard didn't jump me when I was reaching in my back pocket. He didn't have some beefy bouncer, he had one of those smaller guys in a suit and earpiece. Those are probably ex-secret service guys - the kind who could drop you instantly with the Vulcan Death-grip ;-)

The Near Future Will Be Amazing

A company is coming out with a printer that will make blood vessels and, someday, artificial organs for transplants.   The printer works like an ink jet – it uses 2 cartridges: one with cells, and one with a hydrogel for binding.   It's amazing breakthroughs like this that make me think if we can survive 10-15 more years, we will all live to 100+.
